How it works

One song, sung again and again.

Every lesson follows the same calm eight steps, so children always know what comes next, and can move on by themselves.

Listen and learn

Hear the song twice as each word lights up, then meet its key words, with pictures.

Sing three times

First with a quiet helper, then with the music, then alone. A pitch line shows the tune, and the microphone shows your child's voice.

Read and hatch

Read it alone, line by line, then find the words in a tap game. The egg hatches, and a certificate is ready to print.

What's inside

Built for how autistic children learn.

Music, repetition and pictures, without the noise, flashing and pressure of most kids' apps.

Words light up as they're sung

Children hear, see and follow every word, again and again, with a tune that makes it stick.

The sun is up. The sun is up.

Tap any word

Stuck on a word? Tap it to hear it, slowly.

kitebrightskyhigh

Calm by design

No flashing, no time pressure, no surprise sounds. Answers are taps, not talking, and speed goes from −1.5 to +1.5.

See the tune

Bars show how high or low each word is sung. Sing along and your voice becomes a dot that turns the bar green, for gold, silver or bronze medals. Sound never leaves the device.

Private and offline

No accounts, no ads, no tracking. Install it on a tablet and it works without the internet.

Rewards that only add up

Stars and a new bird for every song, 306 to collect. No streaks to lose, no timers, nothing taken away.

Kindergarten to Grade 5

51 songs for every grade.

Each grade practises its own reading skills, with 17 Easy, 17 Medium and 17 Hard songs.

Why we made it

"Singing helped Yuvan learn to read. We want every autistic child to have that chance, for free."

Yuvan is autistic. Reading didn't click for him the usual way, until a program that teaches reading through singing gave him a reason to look at the words, and the patience to see them again and again.

Songbird Reader is our family's way of sharing that, free, with every family who needs it.

Questions

Good to know.

Is it really free?

Yes. No ads, no subscriptions, no in-app purchases. It's a family project, and it will stay free.

Do we need an account?

No. Add a reader with just a first name or nickname. Progress is saved on your device, and you can save a backup file to move it to another one.

Does it work without the internet?

Yes. Open it once, then install it on your home screen. The songs, pictures and games all work offline.

Why does the voice sound like a computer?

Until each song is recorded by a real singer, the app uses your device's own voice in a gentle sing-song style. Real sung recordings are being added. Tip: download an "Enhanced" or "Premium" voice in your device settings for a much more natural sound.
